About Us
Harps North West is as a registered charity having an educational purpose to promote playing, teaching and appreciation of the harp.
Our aim is to enable more people to enjoy this beautiful instrument in its various forms, especially the lever harp. This is also known as the folk harp or clarsach.
To support and share in the charity’s work, people of all ages can join Harps North West as subscribing members.
Mostly our members live in North West England - in Cumbria, Lancashire and North Yorkshire.
As a charity, Harps North West serves the general public in these ways:
- introducing absolute beginners of all ages to play the harp at a tutor-led Beginner Workshop
- promoting and organising tutor-led Player Workshops and courses for harp players across a range of abilities. These workshops and courses primarily are open to our subscribing members and also to non-members
- promoting and providing harp playing performances, as informal recitals and as formal concert events open to the general public
- providing information to the public in order to promote the work of Harp North West
- providing an annual bursary to a harp student to support his/her learning and playing of the harp
- providing annual sponsorship of a harp class prize at Carlisle Music Festival.
Harps North West has a management committee, which is elected annually to plan and co-ordinate the charity’s activities. All who join as members are encouraged to be involved in the organisation
For our subscribing members our management committee promotes harp playing opportunities and social activities.
